Remote Energy Readings in Accordance With European Legislation? With HARDWARIO, You're Ready

EU directives require remote-readable meters by 2027. HARDWARIO provides retrofit solutions for existing infrastructure.

The European Union is placing increasing emphasis on energy efficiency, savings, and digitization. One important step in this area is the obligation to enable remote reading of heat, cold, and hot water, gas, and electricity consumption for new installations and existing systems.

These requirements are based on Directive 2012/27/EU on energy efficiency (EED), which was amended by Directive 2018/2002/EU. This legislation requires member states to gradually introduce measuring devices with remote reading capabilities and to regularly inform end users about their consumption.

Key terms under the EED

  • From 25 October 2020: all newly installed meters and heat distributors must be remotely readable.
  • From 1 January 2022, users must be informed of their consumption at least monthly (if meter data is available remotely).
  • By 1 January 2027, all meters and distributors that are not remotely readable must be replaced or adapted.

These requirements are not just administrative measures - they aim to raise consumption awareness, encourage savings, and contribute to the EU’s climate targets.

HARDWARIO has everything you need to comply with the legislation

At the heart of every remote meter reading is reliable hardware that can collect data from the meters, transmit it securely, and allow it to be evaluated. At HARDWARIO, we offer a range of devices that cover different scenarios and types of measurements:

Wireless data transmission

CHESTER wM-Bus is a device for wireless reading from meters supporting the Wireless M-Bus protocol (typically heat, water, and gas). It is ideal for apartment buildings or distributed installations where cabling is not available.

Wired data transmission

CHESTER M-Bus - collect data from standard M-Bus meters. Suitable solution for utility rooms, boiler rooms or industrial buildings with existing cabling.

Heat measurement

CHESTER Boiler - a device for monitoring heat energy, heat exchanger conditions, and heating systems’ operation. It allows not only reading but also signaling of faults or anomalies.

Electricity measurement

CHESTER Energy - unit for monitoring electrical energy, voltage, current, active and reactive power.

Smart electricity meters - including direct integration into the HARDWARIO ecosystem via RS-485, M-Bus, or directly wM-Bus.

Why HARDWARIO?

  • All our devices are designed and manufactured in the Czech Republic.
  • Support for different types of connections: LTE-M, NB-IoT, LoRaWAN.
  • Open platform - easy integration into existing systems or your cloud.
  • Full remote management, updates, and diagnostics.

Conclusion

European legislation is setting a clear direction - remote metering will soon be standard. Whether you manage an apartment building, industrial complex, or distribution network, HARDWARIO will help you manage this change easily and efficiently. We have the devices, experience, and team to support you every step of the way.
